Solar Eclipse
Annular Solar Eclipse of 30 May 84

An annular (ring) eclipse is just like a total solar eclipse except the angular size of the Moon, as viewed from the Earth, is smaller than the angular size of the Sun. Therefore, the Sun's surface is visible at all times during the annular eclipse. The corona and prominences are not usually seen during an annualar eclipse. This eclipse was unusual in that the Moon and Sun were so close in angular size that the eclipse lasted only 11 seconds and the path of annularity was only a few miles wide (commonly 100 miles wide or more)! The breaks in the Sun all around the Moon are due to mountain peaks on the Moon. Location: Greensboro, North Carolina, USA. Duration: Annularity lasted about 11 seconds. Film: Kodachrome 64. Lens: 1000mm f/16.
