ReturnThese two images are from the same negative taken on 12 March 97 at 9:50 UTC. The image on the left is a short (15 seconds) exposure of a close-up of Hale-Bopp's nucleus. The image on the right is the same negative exposed to attempt show the "bands" or "arcs" eminating from the comet nucleus. These arcs are easy to see visually under high power but are difficult to show in a photograph. The telescope was a 155mm f/7. The film was Fuji Super G+ 400, the exposure was 15 seconds.
