Solar Eclipse
Total Solar Eclipse of 26 Feb 98

We saw this total solar eclipse from the deck of the ms Veendam near Aruba at 12 deg 34 min N, 69 deg 31 min W. Totality lasted 3 min 37 sec. Because we were on a moving ship exposure times had to be kept as short as possible and I concentrated on photographing the solar promenences ("flames") which are relatively bright. This image shows the very last bit of the Sun's surface disappearing behind the Moon. Lens: 600mm f/6 AP Traveler with 2X converter (1200mm f/12). Film: Ektachrome 100. Shutter speed: 1/500 sec. Image scanned from slide.
